Ellsworth Woodward was born July 14, 1861, in Seeconk, Mass., and was educated at the Rhode Island School of Design. He was appointed professor of art at Tulane University in 1885. When the Newcomb College was organized, he became director of the Art School, and held this position until his retirement in 1931. He was one of the founders of the New Orleans Art Association, and was active in the Southern States Art League and the Louisiana Art Teachers' Association. An artist himself, his etchings...

Miriam Flora Levy (1895-1975) was born in Franklin, La., and graduated from Newcomb College in New Orleans in 1916. After several years as a graduate art student, she worked as a craftswoman in the Newcomb Art School until 1940. Miriam Levy's artistic specialty was metal-work; from 1940-1959 she worked as a jewelry designer at Hausmann's Jewelers on Canal Street. From the description of Miriam Levy papers, 1916-1960.
